I'm so happy to read this. I used to think I had to power my way through those academic articles that seemed to be written in English but needed to be translated for me to understand.

So many of these articles seem to be written to impress colleagues rather than to convey information.

As a writer, I can feel great joy in finding just the right word to express what I wish. But sometimes, those words will send the reader to a dictionary, or perhaps on to the next article. It can be hard to pass them up, but I agree with you, that often that is the right choice.
