I haven't been on Medium all that long, but I was coming to the same conclusion about claps. Even 50 claps doesn't prove that someone has read a piece, and 1 clap doesn't mean they haven't.

I do like comments and to interact with people who've read what I've written. When someone says, "Your piece really touched me," that beats all the claps I've ever received put together.
