For me, as an older gay man, it would have been very difficult for me to write with the kind of honesty you are suggesting. Now, I have less to lose by doing so.

Stereotypes are not only applied to us by others. We apply them to ourselves which leads to the guilt and shame so many of us have struggled with.

We must first shed that shame ourselves before we can help others to do so.
