David,

Thanks for your comments and your question about the girth of a penis.

I actually had a comment about girth in the article as I originally wrote it, and then edited it out. I wanted to make sure the primary message was to de-emphasize size as the mark of a man.

If I have one main message it is that lovemaking must be more than penis size and ejaculation, just as you mentioned in your note. Chat sites are full of comments like “How big is your dick?” or directions to “Show me a cum shot.”

It over-simplifies our sexuality to think about sex, only in those two dimensions. Part of my mission is to encourage older men to realize that just because they’ve lost a bit of those as we age, love-making can be even better if we refocus our thinking, again, as you mentioned in your comment.

Penile girth does matter, particularly in selecting the right condom size. How much it really impacts sexual pleasure is another matter.

So, to answer your question, the average girth is about 4.5 inches.

I had to laugh when I researched it because one study said, “in our viewing of 15,000 penises…” Is that every gay man’s dream, or what? (With that comment, I’ve just undermined my main message.)

For those who want to know, here’s how to measure the girth of a fully erect penis:

  1. Use a piece of string or flexible measuring tape.
  2. Gently wrap the string or tape around the thickest part of your penis’ shaft.
  3. If using string, mark where the string meets and measure the string distance with a ruler.
  4. If using a flexible measuring tape, just mark the measurement once it reaches around your penis.

Now everyone knows just how much to lie on the swipe app hookup profiles.
